Still anxious about money

So, I did get the remainder of my deposit on Friday and figured it was because of the holiday on Monday or something. So the SS site still says that they subtracted the 164.90 so I got a 'one time payment' of $950. Yeah they had to fudge my total amount for that to come out even. It still shows no premium cost for Medicare but I need to contact a live person and find out if this is the way it's going to be going forward or what.

We have finances for rent and things this month, going to drop a minimum payment on SDGE, still have to pay phone, internet and car insurance....which went down by about $40 after sending them my mileage info and according to that account it'll drop another 40 starting December. So things are a 'little' better and we are taking advantage of food pantries and places like it for anything we can get.

Speaking of, we went to Salvation Army because they have a monthly food thing. We got a few canned items, some rice and oats, same stuff we get from other places. It is really up to the workers to distribute whatever they have because a little old man who was before us was given a package of four corn cobs along with two bags of sweet potatoes. We got the sweet potatoes and these... those are two Russian fingerling potatoes and three tiny red potatoes. They all fit in my hand with no problem. Those will be used for seedling potatoes and if the gardening gods are with me I'll double that amount next year.

Really. Oh and they had four choices of meat and we said we're fine with any of it... we got vegan imitation meat. Really? Tease us with pictures of fish, chicken, beef and fish and that's what we get? Beggars can't be choosers but still... it's ludicrous. So they have a commodity distribution that is separate from them every 3rd wednesday only inconvenience is having to get there by 7:30am because they distribute number tickets at 8 and it begins at 8:30. Will do what we have to do in order to not starve.

Also signed up for the food distribution in the complex and will get that next week. Basically from the same places, Trader Joe's mostly but, food is food and if we don't like something we can leave it on the table for someone else. We were able to get eggs last time and the steaks and some good hamburger so will see what happens this month.

I am still able to cook fresh food which is the idea. Going to try my hand at refried beans in the crockpot which most recipes say to use an immersion blender on. I don't have one of those but I have a handy dandy 'plunger whisk' I found on the table.

When I first saw it I thought, 'oh this is cool a whisk that you can roll between your hands easier!' I had no clue until Jon was helping me make salsa and he fit it into the jar and started plunging it. I took a step back and was amazed. I had never seen one before. He thought I was joking.  Looking it up it's called a 'push rotary whisk' and that one is the middle size of a three size set apparently. I'll be dipped. I used to have one of those spring style ones but haven't had that for years so this is something new. The only drawback is the tip at the bottom is stainless steel and I used it on a white ceramic cup...oops. Silver marks all in the bottom so now I know.

I have realized I like collecting kitchen things. Bowls, dishes, tools, anything that can be used for cooking. I then figured out that I don't have any baking/cookie sheets and really want to make some cookies. What I do have is some glass 9x9 and a 9x12 dish that I can make a 'sheet cookie out of.

I was able to get to storage this last week and extricated three underbed boxes of yarn and unfinished projects. I took only what I was looking for in yarn in one box and a large bag of projects that were unfinished. I have three or four projects now that are mid construction, one is a top down bolero I was making years ago and I have gained some girth a bit and I don't have enough yarn to finish it. It's discontinued yarn much like a lot of what I have so that will be 'frogged' (because you rip it rip it rip it) and will maybe make a hat or something out of it.

That is bringing me joy/frustration but more soul feeding at least. Small joys in the face of uncertainty is necessary.
