Getting back to my passions

I'm listening to a podcast with an interview of one of my 'heroes' if you will. It is the Babylon Podcast and they were interviewing J. Michael Straczynski, the writer and creator of Babylon 5.
I'm listening to it (thankful I found it) in lieu of going to Comic Con this year and seeing him in person.
What it has done is reaffirm my wish to be a writer. I have a story that's in progress right now and, as with most of my projects, I get most of the way done and lose momentum. I think this interview, a voice from someone who is somehow an echo of my own creative mind, has reminded me of my other passion.
If you're not into science fiction shows, then touting the wonderful writing and characters of the show does no good. But to tell you that he was the script writer behind Changeling, the movie with Angelina Jolie.... (which I haven't seen) and that he was up for an Oscar I believe.... says something about his writing transcending the genre.
He is also a comic book writer and is scripting several movies even now. He has always written stories about the characters and it was evident in the five year arc story that he created.
I should hope one day to have my story published, I'm not wishing to be famous I just want other people to read my story and say, 'That was great! Good characters, I loved it!'. That would be enough for me.  I am a long way off from that. I am amateur at best, fulfilling a personal wish for public story telling without having to get up in front of people.
I have my knitting and my beading (which I have news of in a little bit), and those are personal passions that fulfill my creative need at the moment. They are moderately expensive and time consuming hobbies.
"I don't have hobbies. I'm building a robust set of post apocalyptic skills."
hehehe.. not mine, got that from the internet as a button/tshirt.
Anyway, writing and by a subset, reading fantasy has been one of those things that I did when I was younger and more open minded. I have had a lot of 'adult' things happen lately and has made me step back and take a look at my life.
'It is what I have done with where I have been that should be of interest." Georgia O'Keefe.
One of my favorite quotes and very fitting at this time. I keep digressing....
(and this stupid blogger editor is annoying me. Apparently they've 'redesigned' it and whenever I hit the return key the cursor goes up to another line, not down to the next one so I have to cautiously hit any key to make sure it's on the next line....sigh)
Meanwhile... creative juices flowing. I haven't read a fantasy book in years...well I take that back. After Con Dor last year I tried to read a book by Todd McCaffrey (Anne McCaffrey's son) I realized that I stopped reading her books because of that particular style and put it down mostly read but will not pick it up again.
I am hoping that my story, whether I finish it to publication or not, is a story that people will care about the characters, not see other characters directly and enjoy living in another world for a while.
That's what I enjoy when I read. I forget about the surrounding world for a while and can put up with the frustrations and day to day existence living here when my mind is elsewhere.
Movies like Avatar have filled that void lately but that's living in someone else's world. Not the world that I've created. I'm not saying my world is unique, there are no unique stories anymore, only variances on previously told tales.
I saw two book titles in the bookstore the other day that I had heard about at Con Dor last year. I had actually sat in on two panels where the authors talked.
The Unincorporated Man and The Unincoporated War by Dani and Eytan Kolin. Great premise for the story, not my cup of tea, though if I had to I could read them. It was great to see that they were finally published and in a major book store.
I want that too.
My problem is I am a 'sporadic genius'. I can come up with a scenario, a single project, an idea that is downright brilliant. But to come up with anything for an extended period or repeat the same thing... not going to happen. I'm getting better about it though, as the hundred pieces of jewelry show. But only one or two designs are the same. They are all unique, variances on a theme perhaps but no 'cookie cutter' designs. It makes me bored.
So, here I am, writing about writing instead of.... writing my story.
Oh, about the jewelry. I showed some of my earrings to one of the ladies at the fabric store and her reaction was like she hadn't seen any of my stuff before even though she had gone to my online store. She is going to reserve me a card table to display my stuff and even give me a chance to get up with a microphone and introduce myself!
This is on August 28. I told her I should be feeling okay by then..and then had to tell her about what has happened. She said if I wasn't able to make it then someone else could sit the table and sell for me.
We'll see what happens. First things first. Get through my surgery and treatments first and see where we come out on the other end.

Love to everyone!
Duckies for Devon!
(Nothings happened with that either. See note previously about ideas.)
