While sitting in the pre-op bed waiting for things to happen this morning.
Arrived at 6:30 for a check in time at 7:30, (luckily this gets things moving a bit sooner).
Nurse Shawn (not sure of spelling but female) is perky. I have the same pre-op bed space as I had for my mastectomy. Huh...
Procedure is on the first floor in radiology then I'll be brought back up to the second floor and same space for recovery. Estimated 3 or 4 hours so my noonish estimate was good guess not knowing what exaclty would be involved.
Currently 8 am, ipod battery is runing low due to playing the avatar game. Looking forward to getting some food later on. Almost feel like this is a 'Flowers for Algernon' type journal chronicling what I'm feeling as I'm sitting here. (that was a sad story...)
IV started at 8:35 with same nurse from my first hospital stay. I knew she was the same because she has stickers. 'Susan with stickers'. She first gave me a shot of lidocaine where she wanted to put in the IV which hurt like hell! Then when she couldn't find the vein she opted for the elbow one, I told her not to bother with the lidocaine, it hurt more than the IV needle!
I get to have food after they're done. The drug they use is called 'Twilight' because it doesn't put you completely out. It's what they use for colonoscopy procedures. The first thing that came into my head was the t-shirt quote:
"The sparkling stops now!"
Every time I have something done at the hospital it's costing me less.
Mastectomy 300
Gall bladder 250
Port implant 150
(Nothing here until after the procedure.-
At this rate I should have it down to by the time my boob job rolls around. Oddly enough that actually doesn't cost me anything.
I asked the nurses about how to get the orange crap off afterward and they said there wasn't anything. You have to wait for it to wear off. Dangit.
Okay so that's my notes from today. Piece of cake and being semi-aware of what was going on for the surgery was very wierd. When they started the 'twilight' I felt it hit like the other anesthesia but I didn't go down completely. So I got to hear them start and do the verbal checklist like starting an airplane. Who I was, what was being done, who was the doctor and then all of them agree and get started.
Oh, because they were using x-ray to find the vein they had a machine over my chest/head area and then there was the big readout screens on the other side, (oh I even got to keep my glasses on...forgot to take them off and nobody said anything) It was very cool. One screen was my vitals, and I suspect the others were going to be various angles of where they were working. My head was turned the other direction and I had a 'tent' between me and where they were working and besides, I wanted to keep my eyes closed, it was just better that way.
So afterward, rolled up to my 'usual spot', mostly awake, only a little dizzy, and then was asked if I wanted anything to eat or drink. Yes, please! Turkey and cheese sandwich, fruit cup and an oatmeal cookie with a half can sized lemon lime soda.
Whoo!
So, dressed in regular clothes today only slightly light headed. Might go down for a nap in an hour or so...
Oh almost forgot. Yes I flew my kite yesterday, the wind wasn't the best but I got it up about forty feet! Can't try until next week as they don't want me lifting anything heavy for a few days and my arms got a work out when I only did it for about an hour!
So anyway...charging my ipod and will hop onto the net and maybe SL and see what's going on. Then help Katie with dishes and HOPE to get some sewing started!
Today's quote brought to you by that old comedian himself, George Burns:
"Don't stay in bed, unless you can make money in bed."
Um... I'm getting pretty close to doing that! Wait... I know of only one profession that you make money in bed...not going there!
